Message from the Prosecutor-General

The Prosecution Service is entrusted with the responsibility to discover the truth, and to implement the provisions of criminal law appropriately and promptly, guided by our mottoes of uncompromising pursuit of justice and impartiality as well as neutrality and independence. In doing so, I believe, we shall be able to maintain social and economic order and contribute to the realization of a safe and secure society. To carry out the mandate given by the people of Japan, we must deal with various cases that arise every day with fairness and integrity and render, based upon the law and evidence, dispositions that are just and reasonable.

In recent years, the number of criminal offenses has been on the rise, and the number of serious violent crimes, remittance fraud cases, and child abuse cases that have shaken the public safety continue to increase. In addition, digitalization is proceeding at a rapid pace in every sector of society, spurring the organization of criminal groups and enabling anonymity in many areas, and crimes that transcend national borders are increasing in number and scope. For such reasons as these, the situation surrounding Prosecution Service has changed significantly, making it increasingly difficult to uncover and prove the truth. But even under these difficult circumstances, in order to fulfill the role expected of us, we should work to accurately grasp these emerging issues and devote ourselves to the further improvement of our investigative and trial capabilities as an organization as a whole. We must also conduct activities of the Prosecution Service to support victims of crime, prevent recidivism, and promote the social reintegration of offenders.

Engraved in my heart that the Prosecution Service is founded upon public trust, I am determined to make every effort to ensure that all of us in our nationwide organization are deeply conscious of our mission and zealous in the performance of our duties.
